Importance Of Developing Self-Worth

How To Develop Self-Worth

Self-worth refers to the intellect of one’s value as an individual. It is the understanding of one’s own worth without becoming excessively self-obsessed or self-centered. Without this understanding, one cannot be happy in any aspect of life- be it personal, professional, or social. Developing self-worth is necessary for attaining mental peace and achieving overall happiness.

Understanding Self-Worth

Many a time, self-worth is used interchangeably with the words self-esteem and self-confidence. Self-esteem is what an individual thinks and feels about himself or herself. Self-worth is a deep understanding of the fact that he or she holds value. Self-confidence, on the other hand, is quite different from self-worth. It is not evaluating one’s value but a feeling of being confident in specific areas. Let’s say – you know your self-worth. However, it doesn’t mean you have the self-confidence to perform efficiently in sports, certain subjects, etc.

The Self-Worth Theory

According to this theory, every individual needs to find self-acceptance which subsequently comes through achievement. The theory proposes the self-worth model with the following principal entities including capability, effort, execution, and self-worth. As per this model, it is one’s skills and efforts that impact performance and all these three elements subsequently contribute to one’s self-worth.

Importance Of Developing Self-Worth

Self-worth is critical to the strong mental well-being of an individual. It shields us from mental issues we tend to face from time to time. On the other hand, a person with low self-esteem can easily develop problems like fear, stress, and depression. The worse consequences happen when such a person resorts to alcohol and drug abuse as a solution for his/her mental agony.

Further, people who fail to recognize their self-worth often get into unstable and unhealthy relationships. They constantly seek individuals who they think will make them happy. Such people forget that no one except they themselves can make themselves happy and satisfied. Apart from sound mental health, self-value has other benefits including:

  • Self-value helps you to make efforts in the direction of the things you want. It gets your needs and desires met.
  • Self-worth helps us to make decisions wisely without doubting ourselves. Even if it’s a bad decision, self-value will teach us how to overcome its consequences. It helps us to solve our problems more confidently.
  • People who know their value will be realistic when it comes to expectations. They neither aim for perfection nor demand it from others. Such individuals know not everyone out there will meet their expectations.
  • Self-worthiness will allow you to get into honest and sound relationships. You will truly be honest when it’s about dealing with others.

How To Develop Self-Worth

Developing self-worth is not at all difficult. First, you need to believe that you are valuable no matter how God has made you. You can build it further by:

  • Doing What You Love – Do what you are passionate about and what makes you happy instead of what you are told to do. Whether it’s a job or a hobby, follow your heart when it comes to doing things.
  • Do Not Criticize – Never criticize yourself. Even if you make a mistake, do not regret it; instead, learn from it and get over it.
  • Stop Making Comparisons With Others – “Someone out there has more than me”! Stop focusing on this fact and be grateful for what you already have.
